I am Bill Flythe, candidate for the District 3 seat on the Brunswick County Board of Education. Although my father, with my help, worked extremely hard as a "sharecropper" (farmer) in the 1950s, this inequitable system led us to subsist occasionally on government-surplus food. There was no money for college; so NDEA (National Defense Education Act) loans were used to finance my undergraduate education--B.S. degree in Chemistry. The government support of science education following the launch of the Russian Sputnik satellite allowed me to finance my graduate education with a NASA Pre-doctoral Traineeship--Ph.D. degree in Physical Organic Chemistry.
I have experience as a student, teacher, parent, school volunteer (PTA), and employee of a Fortune 100 company. Twenty years were spent as a quality control chemist/laboratory supervisor in industry. Twelve and two years were spent as a science teacher at the high school and college levels, respectively. Since my retirement in 2005, I spent five years on the Brunswick County Planning Board and served four years as treasurer of the Brunswick County Democratic Party. Approximately 35 years have been spent as a volunteer for ROCAME--an organization that encourages minority students to consider STEM careers.
1) Increase funding for public education, especially for teacher pay and pre-K classes.
2) Improve the achievement of ALL students but emphasis will be on closing the "achievement gap".
3) Promote a STEM curriculum that will prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
4) Promote partnerships among teachers, parents, and community organizations that will address such issues as censorship, student health, and school safety.
When you see him, stand up and shout
“Bill Flythe for education, without a doubt”
He is busy making a political run
And I assure you, it is not for fun
While you are relaxing on a well-deserved vacation
He will be updating www.flytheforeducation
The political process is not a game
And shouldn’t be entered to obtain fame
First, this is truly a must
Find a candidate you can really trust.
When you’re ready to go to the polls
Consult his website to review stated goals
As you walk to the ballot counter at the finish line
Stop and say a prayer for a friend of mine
